Unless you make it a practice to live under a rock, avoid the news, Oprah Winfrey, Dr Oz, 60 Minutes or any specials with Barbra Walters, you have heard, by now, about resveratrol.

Eighteen years ago 60 minutes took their first look at something called the French paradox, which was the appearance that the French had lower instances of heart disease than Americans, despite a lifestyle involving a high fat diet and large amounts of red wine consumption.

Today, researchers have identified a specific substance in the red wine, a fungus to be precise, that they believe, when taken in very high concentrations, may extend life an extra ten to twenty years. That fungus is known by Sirtris as SRT501, and to the rest of us as resveratrol.

Sirtris is the company that 60 Minutes interviewed and depending on your beliefs about huge multi billion dollar companies looking out for the best interests of the consumer, sold themselves to Glaxosmithkline for about 720 million dollars.

This brings me to the number four (Were counting down) bad thing about resveratrol that you should know: The company that owns the research rights and development of resveratrol is the second largest Pharmaceutical company on the planet. Earning over seven billion dollars in revenue last year and established in over 70 countries, this is what is commonly referred to as a “Monopoly”. Just something to consider when the price to extend your life could arguably become “controlled”.

Tying in closely to number four is the number three bad thing about resveratrol that you should know: Neither Sirtris, nor glaxosmithkline have their name on any resveratrol product on the market. That’s right. If 60 minutes went strait to the source to bring us the facts about this new wonder pill, why can’t we find a bottle anywhere with their name on it being sold? Better yet, Who is making the stuff on the market currently and how good is it?

That brings us to the number two bad thing about resveratrol that you should know: Resveratrol is an herbal supplement that is NOT regulated by the food and drug administration. That’s right. With all the coverage of how great resveratrol is, anyone with Japanese knotweed or a grape vine in their back yard can dry out and grind up product thought to have the active fungus and cram it into a capsule and sell it to you for whatever price they wish to charge with absolutely zero accountability as to it’s effectiveness.

That brings us to the NUMBER ONE bad thing you should know about resveratrol.

The number one thing you should know about resveratrol is that absolutely no studies exist supporting resveratrol extending the life of humans. That is a fact.

Research Sirtris, research the sirtuin gene, research Christopher Westphal  or David Sinclair, a biochemist at Harvard studying the genetic components of aging. Even research centenarian populations in Japan and around the world and the results are always the same. Resveratrol has been proven to extend the life span in yeast perhaps, but not humans. No way, no how, forget it. No proof whatsoever.

In conclusion, should you buy resveratrol for yourself? That’s entirely up to you. The most important thing being emphasized here is just make sure you know the facts and you go in with your eyes open before shelling out hard earned cash under false presumptions.

Resveratrol And Weight Loss – Real Facts Or Just Hype
After much research on the subject, I can positively say that the results of clinical studies performed all around the world are definitely looking good. Is resveratrol a miracle substance that can perform amazing feats – yes and no. While it is true that many clinical studies including those performed at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cell Biology in Illkirch, France have shown that this substance can indeed help speed up metabolism. All Resveratrol Products are NOT Created Equal

What does that mean? Very simply, not only are there different amounts of trans Resveratrol in different popular products currently being sold, there are also different additives and other extraneous ingredients that you really should be aware of before you buy.

For Example……

One of my close friends is allergic to green tea. Sounds a bit weird, right? But it’s true..and she is simply unable to drink green tea without having some sort of allergic reaction that spoils the rest of her day..:-) Guess what? One of the very common Resveratrol supplements on the market (and one that I personally really love) also has some green tea extract. She didn’t pay attention..and bought it, and found herself NOT feeling great immediately afterward. (once she looked at the bottle she immediately understood why)

The Key Takeaway is This

Resveratrol is safe. I’m not a doctor of course, but there are no ‘warnings’ in any of the general health and wellness literature about reasons to avoid it. (but check yourself if you’re concerned obviously) What you really DO need to look for, however, is any other ingredients that may not sit well with you. (and while not common, some of us ARE allergic to random or even odd ingredients that are commonly found in supplements, so just check the bottle, or the web site before you buy to make sure you are good to go!)

Orally, it has been ineffective against lung cancer and leukemia, but effective against throat, stomach, intestinal and colon tumors.  When injected into the lung, it did slow the growth of the tumor.  It appeared to help prevent breast cancer, but had no effect on existing tumors. 

In order for studies to continue concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer treatment, researchers believe that they will need to find a way to get the compound to the tumor. They believe that it only has a positive affect on tumors that it can come into direct contact with.  In other words, simply injecting it into the bloodstream or giving it orally is not effective.

As far as resveratrol prostate cancer prevention goes, it is not likely that there will be additional research.  Right now, most of the studies are focusing on the anti-diabetic or blood-sugar lowering capabilities of the compound.  Some small studies are being conducting concerning its use as an anti-obesity drug, as well. 

In animal studies, it has been shown to counteract the effects of a high fat diet, although exactly “how” it does that is not clear, but it has some effect on the genes within the cell’s DNA.  So, there may be many advantages to supplementation, but resveratrol prostate cancer preventative activity may not be among them.  Green tea and grape seed extracts, however, may be advantageous for that purpose.

Instead of focusing on resveratrol and prostate cancer prevention, you may look for alternatives.  Green tea is one of the supplements that are allowed to bear the health claim of helping to prevent cancers of the breasts and the prostates.  Other important botanicals and nutrients for men’s health include Tribulus, damiana, L-arginine, gingko biloba, corn silk extract, Chrysin, saw palmetto and lycopene, as well as omega 3 fatty acids.

Cancers of all types are caused by free radicals, chronic inflammation and exposure to carcinogens.  Normal cells become mutated and multiply spreading to the surrounding tissue and eventually forming a tumor.  Resveratrol prostate cancer studies were initiated because it has unique antioxidant activity.  Antioxidants neutralize free radicals.

Green tea, Chrysin and lycopene have antioxidant activity and they are natural anti-inflammatories.  Omega-3 fatty acids are also natural inflammation fighters.  So, even though the animal model studies concerning resveratrol and prostate cancer were not promising, there is hope for prevention and treatment.

As the standard treatments cause numerous side effects, many people are choosing alternative treatments.  That’s one reason that animal studies were conducted concerning the potential of resveratrol prostate cancer treatment and the reason that those studies are likely to continue.

Quite simply, because there are still things we are unsure about related to how it interacts with some female hormones.
