Scientists have been researching for many years now to see that if they restrict the calorie intake in animals, would it increase their life span, and what would the health benefits be?

Because of the interest to see if the same results would be found in humans, a test has been running over some years now using human volunteers. Their calorie intake was reduced by up to 25% to allow scientists to see the effects it would have.

Grapefruit Seed Extract May Help Fight Stomach And Intestinal Bacteria

Grapefruit seed extract is regarded as being natural antibiotic that is effective against a broad range of bacterial infections. It has also been used to treat parasitic infections and a range of viral infections as well as having found uses for a wide variety of medical conditions.

So what is it about grapefruit seed that is so special? Most people are acquainted with grapefruit, which as a member of the citrus family of fruits, and not to be confused with grapes which are a totally different type of plant. Grape seed extract is also a useful natural medication, but used for totally different conditions.

Because of its efficacy against parasitic and viral infections, grapefruit seed extract is very useful in treating various forms of food poisoning. But, how was this remarkable property of the simple grapefruit seed noticed? The answer to that depends very much upon what version of the story of Einstein Laureate physicist and immunologist Dr. Jacob Harich you believe.

Dr. Harich was not only a scientist but a hobby gardener in Florida, and the two versions of his story tell either that he decided to investigate why grapefruit seeds tasted so bitter, or why the grapefruit seeds in his compost heap failed to compost, or rot. Whichever story is correct, and perhaps both are, the result was the discovery that grapefruit seeds appeared to be a very effective antibiotic.

In fact it has been shown to be effective against over 800 strains of bacteria and viruses and also effective against many fungi that lead to illness in humans. Because of this it is used in cased of food poisoning that involve bacterial infection of the gastrointestinal tract. In fact during the latter part of the 1980s, grapefruit seed extract was tested against a number of known antibiotics and found to be as effective as any of them. Similar results obtained in a number of tests in the USA and elsewhere in the world, and it appears that it is an excellent treatment for the symptoms of food poisoning.

Not only that, but it has been found effective in the treatment of some immunodeficiency diseases, presumably because its antimicrobial properties does much of the work that the immune system would normally do, and so relieves it of much of its hard work. This allows the immune system to concentrate on conditions which are exacerbated by deficiencies in its operation.

Bifidobacteria and Loactobacilli are bacteria that are beneficial to the digestive system. The measure of a good broad spectrum antibiotic is that it does not affect the beneficial bacteria, and grapefruit seed extract has no effect on the former and only a mildly inhibiting effect on the latter. It is also non toxic to humans, which is another measure of a good antibiotic. You would have to drink about two pints of the extract, around 4000 time the normal dose, for the treatment to be potentially fatal.

Among the many uses of the extract are not only in controlling gastrointestinal infections, but also general fungal conditions of the skin, vaginal infections and yeast infections, and also colds and sore throats. It is also believed to support the immune system, not only by its antimicrobial properties but through its effect on intestinal health upon which much of our immune system is dependent. It can also protect patients with symptoms of AIDs and other immunodeficiency conditions from infection.

Its effect on yeast infections around the nether regions of small children has been documented, and it has also been found to be very safe to young children. In fact many mothers have it as a permanent addition to their medicine cabinet.

It is not that long ago when doctors believed all diseases to be due to bacteria or viruses. It is now becoming clear that a large proportion is actually due to fungal infections and parasites. Many conditions such as allergies, circulatory disease and some forms of arthritis have been shown to be due to fungal infections that weaken the immune system. Grapefruit seed extract has been found to be effective in treating many types of fungal disease.

In using the extract in this way, and to treat bacterial infections, it is best to start with a low dose and gradually increase it. This is because when fungi and bacteria are destroyed they release toxins, and too high a dose could result in too much toxin being produced for your body to handle. If you take it gradually you will get the same result, but without the risk of the nausea and diarrhea which the toxins can cause.

Despite all of these benefits, grapefruit extract has not been given the credit it deserves, and much research has still to be done to establish the constituents of the seed that confer these properties. Among these are known to be proanthocyanadins, a class of flavanols with strong antioxidant properties, and a diphenol hydroxybenzene complex that destroys bacteria through the cytoplasmic membrane to prevent the uptake of amino acids and cause leakage of the cell contents. Other active components are Vitamins C and E, tocopherols, limonoids and sterols, in addition to a number of important minerals.

However, there is still much work to be done, although the extract will continue to be used by many devotees for the treatment, not only of food poisoning symptoms, but also of conditions such as acne, athlete’s foot, gingivitis, cold sores, sinusitis and parasitic infections. It appears to be practically a cure-all.

There appear to be no drug interactions, although some medications do react with grapefruit juice, such as some treatments for high blood pressure. If your treatment advises you not to take grapefruit juice, then do not take grapefruit seed extract. Another factor to be aware of is that since the extract is an effective bactericide, then it could deplete the digestive tract of friendly bacteria essential for digestion. You are advised, therefore, to take a supplement of acidophilus, which is easily taken in the form of yoghurt type drinks specifically formulated or dietary supplement for the purpose.

The health benefits of Resveratrol – can it really help you?

Back in 2006 the substance resveratrol made the headlines when scientists demonstrated that it could successfully be used as a means of keeping overfed mince from gaining further weight. What this substance actually did to these mince is turned them fit and health as well as slowed down their aging process. Since this hit the headlines back in 2006 scientists have been looking into ways that this could be reflected in human use and have found that it could actually be used to help prevent the negative effects of high-calorie diets in humans. So what exactly is resveratrol and can it really benefit us?

Resveratrol is a chemical compound that has been discovered in certain plants. It is known as a phytoalexin due to the fact that plants actually produce this substance as an antibiotic. The reason that plants produce this substance is as a way of fighting bacteria and fungi that threaten the life of the plant. Some of the main plants that produce it are grapes and skins of grapes that produce wine, raspberries, mulberries, blueberries and cranberries. However resveratrol is a substance that can also be found within peanuts and certain pine trees as well as a Japanese plant known as knotweed. One of the most publicized places that resveratrol has been discovered however is red wine thanks to the fact this substance is found within grapes. So what exactly does all of this mean to you?

Due to the results that were seen when the substance was given to mince, scientists have been looking deeper into what it could do for humans. Some of the research that has been conducted has revealed that the substance has great anti-ageing effects within certain organisms; it has extended the lifespan of yeast by 60%, worms and flies by 30%, and fish by about 60%. If it can produce these results for other organisms it has been noted that resveratrol could have amazing results within humans when it comes to anti-ageing. It has the potential to slow down the aging process which means wrinkles could be kept at bay and skin could generally have a healthier glow. It also means that the way your body functions could take longer to age as well, which in effect could keep disease and illness at bay, which is in fact one of the suggested health benefits that people have associated with this substance.

Preliminary studies surrounding the substance have demonstrated that resveratrol could potentially be an excellent antioxidant. So what would this mean to your health? Well for starters there is reason to believe that this could extend your exercise tolerance and to some extent help to reduce any memory loss that you may suffer from. On top of this however some of the research may hold evidence that the substance could help the ability to fight viruses such as HIV, remember however this is only still in the trial status and nothing has been proven for sure but it is unlikely that resveratrol will be able to completely cure such viruses.

As I have previously mentioned, studies surrounding this substance are still being conducted so nothing about the results have been set in stone yet, however studies have concluded that there are strong indications that resveratrol has certain health benefits including anti-inflammatory, anti-aging and anti-cancer characteristics. Benefits such as these can help to prevent damage to your body as well as provide protective support to the blood vessels caused particularly by elevated levels of blood glucose.

This substance is starting to sound almost too good to be true and we can only hope that with more studies all of these qualities work in our favor. For the time being however it may be a bit premature for us to start thinking this will stop all of our problems. The substance requires a lot more study first, especially within the theory of anti-cancer characteristics. The reason that I say this revolves around the fact there is some evidence that suggests resveratrol might act like an estrogen in the body and actually contribute to more cases of breast cancer.

It is always important to look at both the potential positive and negative aspects of anything that claims to help you. One more positive point that is floating around about resveratrol is how it can help to prevent the negative effects of high-calorie diets in humans. Although this won’t help you loss weight it will help you control your weight for the fact it helps you control the effects of calories on your body. It is suggested that it can help keep you in better health.

The next step with resveratrol is to investigate further into the effects of the chemical within humans. This is important so we are able to determine the safety of high doses of the substance and look further into any side effects that may be associated with it. Until then we should just continue with red wine consumption but only in moderation of course as a means of gaining some form of resveratrol intake, even if it is only 0.3% of the amount that was given to the mice.

Anyone Ever Use Rez V Supplement To Help Improve Wrinkles?

Saw product called RezV, which is resveratrol supplement in high doses, advertised for anti-wrinkle, to use in conjunction with various miracle creams…you know the drill..”free trial”, etc etc. But am curious about the supplement. Can’t find true consumer review on it related to effect on wrinkles. Any input?

Can Someone Help Me Build A Plan Of Supplements And Natural Foods To Increase Immune Health?

Fall is coming, and like many teenagers, I’m wary of the swine flu as well as the usual flu risk. I’m in healthy shape, but I’d like to make sure my defenses are top notch. After some research I’ve compiled a list of substances that will supposedly be beneficial. I was just wondering if it is best to get these from natural sources or if its safe to take supplements, in what dosages, and if a combination of these substances is safe. They include -
Vitamin D – Absorbed from sun exposure but is also found in fish and available in supplements.
Resveratrol – Most highly concentrated natural source is grape skins, but some recommend taking a supplement.
Quercetin – Naturally occurring in red grapes, apples, and onions but can be taken as a supplement.
Beta Glucan – Found in oats and grains.
N-Acetyl Cysteine – Available as a supplement, clinically proven to boost resistance to influenza.
Vitamins B6 and E
Last but not least, the most popular, Vitamin C.
Are all of these safe for a teenager to take daily? If they are, what are the safe recommended dosages, and in what forms should they be consumed, be it natural or supplement forms?
